Big Box Stores Shrinking
(from press and online reports)
The big-box retailers have long been tough competition for small, mom-and-pop shops, but there are indications that smaller may be better, at least in certain situations.
According to MSNBC.com, two of the biggest Big Boxes, Wal-Mart and Home Depot, are both building smaller stores. Wal-Mart is modifying its Neighborhood Market stores, typically about 39,000 square feet. The existing 112 stores will be joined by 15 to 20 new Neighborhood Markets over the next year.
The New York Post even reported that analysts say Wal-Mart is mulling stores as small as 20,000 square feet.
This year Atlanta-based Home Depot has also opened stores in California that are 28,600 to 50,000 square feet, instead of its average 105,000 square foot stores. Similar smaller stores are also scheduled to open in Tennessee in July.
Retailers as diverse as grocery and electronics chains are also considering downsizing. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that that city's largest grocery chain, Giant Eagle, is opening 14,000 square foot Giant Eagle Express stores to try to bridge the gap between supermarkets and convenience stores.
Trends in appliances and electronics also are causing other retailers to downsize, such as Best Buy, Circuit City, Lowe's, Target, and Costco. The Wall Street Journal reports that shrinking electronic components and competition are causing leaders Best Buy and Circuit City to make their new stores 30% to 40% smaller than current properties. More and more shoppers buy music and movies online further reducing the need for rack space.
