Trade Show Season Promises Variety of Products and Resources

With the new year rapidly approaching, industry vendors, promoters and retailers are looking forward to the Winter trade shows. The variety of products and emphases has never been greater. No matter where you live there will be a national or regional trade show near you.

Chicago: The Chicago Market: Living and Giving® has announced that Susan Casey, Editor-In-Chief of "O, The Oprah Magazine", will lead the keynote presentation at this year’s January Market, on Monday, January 24. Casey, a bestselling author, award-winning journalist and the editor-in-chief of O, The Oprah Magazine, will share her highly successful communication strategies that landed her one of the most sought after positions in the media industry. Attendees of the keynote presentation will learn how Casey is taking O Magazine to the next level by incorporating her vast knowledge of product trends, marketing, branding and media.

Buyers and retailers will walk away from Casey’s presentation with proven strategies to improve their public relations, branding and marketing efforts in order to grow their business. “We are so excited to have Susan Casey join us as our keynote speaker. She has an amazing background and is sure to inspire and motivate our buyers and retailers this January,” said Joan Ulrich, senior vice president, MMPI.

Las Vegas: The Interior Design Society has selected Las Vegas Design Center to Host its 2011 National Leadership Conference. The 2011 event, comprised of an awards ceremony and a one-day workshop, will be held January 22-23 to coincide with the start of Las Vegas Market, Jan. 24-28. “Our goal is to exceed the expectations of design professionals by not only serving as a comprehensive, state of the art home furnishings resource but also as a hub for timely, relevant educational and entertaining programming and events,” said Las Vegas Design Center Vice President Randy Wells. “We are thrilled about our partnership with IDS and the opportunity to share the experience of Las Vegas Design Center and Las Vegas Market with their membership.”

The 2011 IDS National Conference begins with a semi-formal awards ceremony at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino, the host hotel, on Saturday. Workshops on Sunday will offer put-in-play business strategies and leadership insights. The keynote address will be by luxury market consultant and author Steve Nobel and the conference will conclude with a reception with HGTV’s Monica Pedersen on Sunday.

Dallas: the International Home of Lighting at Dallas Market Center has announced the January 20-24 Dallas International Lighting Market will feature thousands of new products from nearly 300 exhibitors, complemented by practical seminars, networking opportunities, and helpful business information for the thousands of lighting retailers attending the show from around the world. It all adds up to the most important event of the year for lighting.

Dan Blitzer, instructor for the American Lighting Association will present several seminars including on Friday “Lighting Regulations: How Upcoming Changes will Affect Your Business” and “Hands-On Lighting: Evaluating the Visual Impact of Lighting” and on Saturday “Selling the Glitter and Glow: Romancing the Light and Lighting the Romance” on Saturday, January 22 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. – Blitzer will discuss the importance of prominent decorative lighting and how to communicate its beauty and value.

Atlanta: In Atlanta, AmericasMart is celebrating 50 years since the opening of Building 1, formerly the Merchandise Mart. Opened in 1961 as a showcase for home furnishings, decor and accents, AmericasMart continues its tradition in the January 2011 Atlanta International Gift & Home Furnishings Market and International Area Rug Market. Building 1 comprises more than two million square feet of exhibit space with 15 floors of permanent showrooms (source).

Seattle: All the way across the country, the Seattle Gift Show, staged in the Washington State Convention Center, is featuring "Birdwatch America West", featuring the best in backyard nature and birding products. "We expect the Birdwatch America category to reach a whole new audience of birding and backyard nature product retailers, while also expanding the buying opportunities for our well-established attendee base," explains Doug Miller, president, Urban Expositions. "We’re always looking for ways to fine-tune and expand the product and service offerings to meet the specialized needs of the Pacific Northwest retailer and this new category is one of many new innovations we are working on for the show."

San Francisco: Down the coast, the San Fransisco International Gift Fair at the Moscone Center, has the distinction of being the one of the first shows of the season, beginning January 8. The show also features "Green By Design", the largest "green" gift show on the West Coast. Doug Miller, President, Urban Expositions, also emphasizes his company's efforts to reduce expenses for attendees. "Once again, we’re making it even easier on retailers’ travel budgets by buying down rates on our already discounted hotel properties, offering parking reimbursements and a host of other time and money-saving features."

Boston: Another show now managed by Urban Expositionsis the Boston Gift Show, which returns March 27 to the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. Among the initiatives for the March show are expanding the show's overall selection with special emphasis on the Souvenir and Made-in-New-England sections.

New York: The New York International Gift Fair will welcome an influx of new resources in the Personal Accessories division. More than 40 new and returning companies will debut a breadth of wearables and travel accessories, bringing the total number of exhibitors in the division to 350. "Personal Accessories will offer buyers an exponentially increased number of fresh, innovative accessory lines," said Dorothy Belshaw, NYIGF director and George Little Management (GLM) senior vice president.

Of course this is just a sampling of the variety of products and learning opportunities coming up during the winter trade shows. Visit GiftsWholesale.Com for an extensive list and visit the show promoters' websites for detailed information about dates, times and particulars.

Happy Holidays

Just a few days more and you'll finally be able to put up your feet and rest! Well, at least for a few hours.

First, take a deep breath and applaud yourself for a job well done. You survived the Christmas season of 2010. And you are a champion! (Believe me: you deserve the gift of affirmation.)

You're probably already thinking of your day-after-Christmas to do list: mark down tables, prepare for inventory, create a Valentines display. No doubt, the list is endless.

Stop.

One of the most valuable activities you can do - while it's fresh in your mind and in the minds of your employees - is to process the lessons learned from the selling season. It will be your guiding light for a successful 2011 fourth quarter.

Hurry! Grab a yellow pad or your laptop and sit down with your team. Review and record the following:

Product categories: hits and losers, when items sold best, where they sold best, what price did they sell best at? What products are must-haves for next year?
Gift wrap: was it expeditious, was your store name and logo on it, was it affordable and yummy to look at?
Promotions and events: what was and wasn't successful, cost of producing, conversion rate (guests to sales), what produced a smile or a kind remark and a sale?
Staffing: was it sufficient? What would you change next year? What temporary help would you like to keep as permanent?
Store window: Was it a show stopper? What can you do next year to entice more walk-in traffic and sales?

Armed with this invaluable sales analysis from 2010, you'll be poised to take 2011's 4th quarter by storm! Here's to a healthy and prosperous New Year!

Truly,
Cheryl
