“The times they are a-changin'” says the old song. And it's never been truer than now. The accompanying photo is of the Atlanta, Georgia yellow pages a few years back, so big it had to be two volumes, compared with the entire yellow pages today; much thinner and several inches smaller in height and width.
Obviously people are not using phone books like they used to, as illustrated by the second photo, of a dumpster designated for "Phonebooks Only", overflowing with phone books, many still in the bags they came in. But people are still looking for businesses, they are just doing it on the World Wide Web, as well as mobile devices such as cellphones and GPS's.
A recent survey found that 75% of people who are web-active will search for a store on the web before driving to the store. They do not necessarily plan to order product online, but they want to confirm the store's location, hours and the products carried. They may even call or email the store to ask questions before taking valuable time to drive to the location.
But that doesn't mean you have to have your own website to provide information about your store. Google.com, the number one search engine, has a program called Google Places (formerly Google Local) that lets you put in your store's information so you can be found when prospective customers in your area do a search.
To see what happens, try entering a product that you carry in your store, followed by your city name and see the page that results. First on the page will likely be a map with store locations pintpointed on it and links to several stores, either to their websites or to their Google Places listing.
Other popular web search engines have programs, such as Yahoo! Local Lisitngs and Bing Local Listing. Another service with free local listings is ezlocal.com.
And, wouldn't you know it, the telephone companies also have online directories! AT & T has YellowPages.Com. SuperPages.Com and YellowBook.Com are also options.

That is the promise offered by Microsoft's "Tag" application for Smart Phones. Available from http://tag.microsoft.com, Tag starts with a High Capacity Color Barcode (HCCB) which is really just a colorful square that can appear in a variety of places from on products in stores to real estate signs.
Unlike other barcode technologies, Microsoft Tags don't actually store information. All they store is a unique ID which is sent to Microsoft’s servers. This way, much more information can be included, and a bigger variety of information, than if it was just on the tag itself. A nice side-effect of this is also the ability for publishers to gather reporting data on how many times it was seen (source).
The customer simply aims his Smart Phone camera at the Tag and is then taken to online information about the product. service or event. Tags can be in magazines ads or on signs and posters as well as on products. You can see a video demonstration of how it is used here.
The Tag "app" is available for Android, WinMo, Symbian, Blackberry, and iPhone platforms (source).
