Summer Shows Anticipating Increased Traffic
Offering Learning Opportunities for Retailers

As Spring turns to Summer, vendors in the Gift and Home Industry turn their attention to the Summer Shows. This year vendors are feeling a little better about the prospect, since, for many, the Winter shows gave hopeful evidence of economic recovery.

"Our exhibitors have reported brisk business in their booths and a positive response from buyers to the innovations they had readied for the Show," said Phil Brandl, president of the not-for-profit International Housewares Association, which owns and operates the International Home + Housewares Show in Chicago. Speaking of the March 2010 show, Brandl continued: "We were encouraged by the significant increase in international buyer attendance this year as well as by the reports that U.S. retailers and senior executives were present in large numbers."

"The Philadelphia Gift Show has really been steadily gaining momentum since moving from our temporary Reading location back to the Montgomery County area of Pennsylvania. Each show brings increasing numbers of top name manufacturers and rep agencies to the exhibitor base," says Doug Miller, president, Urban Expositions.

The new Dallas Hospitality & Contract Design show, which will be concurrent with the June Total Home & Gift Market, invites designers with large-scale projects in hospitality, workplace, institutional and government environments to shop for the built environment. Thousands of product lines will be available from permanent and temporary exhibitions including: lighting, decorative accessories, interior and outdoor furniture, permanent floral, artwork, bath and bedding, rugs, tabletop, and many other categories.

While seeing, touching and ordering new products is the obvious reason for travelling to trade shows, many shows are providing valuable learning opportunities for retailers. In Seattle, Washington, the Seattle Gift Show (Aug. 21-24) features a variety of seminars like "Stand Out! Brand Differentiation for Store Owners" presented by Lisa Hufford, president and founder of Simplicity Consulting. Other seminars include "What To Put Where, Why And How" which includes an actual store transformation exercise from layout analysis to strategic product placement, and sessions on blogging and using Facebook for business.

Los Angeles' California Gift Show will feature Crate and Barrel chairman and co-founder Gordon Segal presenting a keynote address from 11 AM - 12 Noon on Friday, July 16. "We will explore the importance of creative retailing and the many ways to think about your store's environment," said Segal.

The September edition of the Las Vegas Souvenir & Resort Gift Show will return to North Hall 3 & 4 of the Las Vegas Convention Center with a wealth of new companies and top name manufacturers. As the show heads into its fifth year, steady growth and positive buzz have helped position it as the national event for the souvenir and resort industry. This year, the National Association of Retail Buyers (NARB) will host two educational programs during the Las Vegas Souvenir & Resort Gift Show touching on Store Planning and Social Media, plus an NARB Social.

In Atlanta, AmericasMart University (AMU), offers 12 courses in the curriculum in addition to business classes taught by business professionals and will spotlight two keynote addresses on Saturday, July 17 and Sunday, July 18 that discuss how social media can increase customer interaction and loyalty and how retail can survive in a post-recession world. Outside of AMU, but still extremely relevant to business education, are nearly 30 classes, seminars and workshops designed to further inspire.

Gift Basket Professionals have learning opportunities at "The Ultimate Gift Show", which includes the The National Gift Basket Professional Convention in Canton, Ohio. Seminar topics include "How do you or your staff answer the phone?", "How good is your Database and Accounting System?" and "Are you adding Floral to your sales?"

At the New York International Gift Fair in August, seminars will include "Gift Trends: 2010 and Beyond" with Gift & Home Interactive's John Saxtan, editor and publisher; "ART Retailer Roundtables" coordinated by Sharon Davis, Executive Director, ART; "Home Trends - What's Now? What's Next?" presented by Michelle Lamb, internationally known trend forecaster and publisher of The Trend Curve, plus many more on subjects such as Green Marketing, Web Marketing, increasing sales and managing inventory.

Whether you go to a regional or national show, the opportunities are there to help you build your business.
