Watching Your Spending in a Tough Economy

“You've got to spend money to make money" is the old saying. It's true that spending money is a necessary part of any business, but spending wisely is never more important than during a difficult economy. So how do you prioritize to make the most of your expense dollars?

cash registerLuke McKinney, of Entrepreneur.Com, says "Beware the 'Shiny Stuff' Seduction." Speaking primarily to business start-ups, he says to buy "what you need, not what you want", understanding that there will always be a gadget that's more flashy than the one before. "Ask yourself, if I buy this, will we use it everyday? If not, is there a company who can do this for us?"

McKinney also says to beware of the lure of time-savings promised by many electronic gadgets. Remember than every piece of technology requires time on the learning curve, so evaluate whether the net time saved will be significant enough to justify.

Hidden Costs
Many purchases result in expenses that may not be apparent when the purchase is made. Computer printers are a perfect example. The initial cost is one consideration, but the cost of ink or toner may over time drastically change the economics of comparative brands.

In addition to unnecessary spending on shiny toys, common mistakes made by entrepreneurs include underestimating miscellaneous and unexpected expenses, launching new products, locations or even startup businesses without adequate testing of the marketplace, and premature hiring (source).

The latter point reminds that there are many hidden costs in adding employees, such as taxes, insurance, saving and investment plans, etc. Some of the foregoing are optional and some most definitely are not. Which leads to another mistake entrepreneurs may be tempted to make.

"Entrepreneurs are often apprehensive to speak with an accountant, for whatever reason," says Mike Michalowicz, author of The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur. "Truth be told, you must meet with an accountant, as it will save you money in the long run. An accountant can do everything from helping you avoid tax penalties to setting you up with the right salary or making sure you are on track with your quarterly tax payments. The accountant is your friend, I promise."

Celebrate National Picnic Month with Dune Road Designs Dinnerware
Make the most of beach and seaside meals with a nautically-themed table

BELVEDERE, Calif., July 11, 2011: Dune Road Designs is the brainchild behind friends Alisa Bekins, Denise Burkard, and Elizabeth Canady. In 2009, this women-owned business began with a simple idea: to produce dinnerware that celebrates life by the water. Named after a road in the Hamptons, a famous beach destination in Long Island, New York, the company maintains its nautical theme while branching out into style products for the home.

"Talking over a glass of wine two years ago, we decided to create a company and a product line that fit who we are - women who love travel, food, and entertaining - and in turn, who our customers are," said Bekins, Dune Road Design's "Skipper." "Whether on deck, by the beach or at your kitchen table, our dinnerware fits your lifestyle."

All of Dune Road Designs products are designed in-house with a focus on nautical themes, and feature high quality melamine for ease of use, storage and cleaning. Inspiration for the designs come from color, textiles and fashion combined to create a fresh, current look.

"Since introducing Dune Road Design's dinnerware to our customers, we're hearing rave reviews," said Kelly Erickson, owner of Citrus gift boutique, located in Tiburon, Calif. "Not only is it a stand out design at a reasonable price, but on first inspection, most believe it's real china. The quality and customer service is impressive."
