Products With A "Cause"

“More than 900 million people in the developing world suffer from malnourishment.”

This startling statement comes from the "Our Cause" page of www.hallejoy.com, the website of Halle Joy, a Texas company which designates a portion of its proceeds to support worthy causes around the world.

Echoing the statement of Jesus Christ in the New Testament, "I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was hungry and you gave me food, I was naked and you clothed me, I was a stranger and you welcomed me", Halle Joy emphasizes concern for Water, Food, Clothing, Orphans and Disaster Relief in developing countries. The company's products also echo Bible themes with Collections named "Grace", "Hope", "Virtue", "Eden", "Noah", etc. Product types include jewelry, handbags and accessories with exotic patterns reflecting the company's "Mission Fashion" ("Change The World, Change Your Look") emphasis. Acacia Creations is a company that benefits people in Kenya by giving them jobs. The company makes artistic jewelry, tableware and figurines from recycled materials ranging from soda cans to paper. The opportunity for a job is important, but the company also donates 50 cents for every item sold from the Healing Hearts Collection to Gertrude's Children's Hospital in Nairobi and $1.00 for every bracelet purchased to buy shoes and school supplies for Kenyan children. Acacia practices "Fair Trade" which includes payment of a fair price, gender equality and safe and healthy working conditions. Speaking of children, City of Refuge Children's Home and Coffee Farm in Jamaica was founded in 2002 to help children who are orphaned or abandoned. The Home is largely funded from the proceeds of the Blue Mountain Coffee grown on the Home's property. While the children are learning about the farm, they are NOT used as laborers at any step in the process, although some might eventually be employed by the farm as adults. Workers on the farm are paid a fair wage and work in a good environment. "The more coffee we sell, the more children we can help," says Steve Puffpaff, director of the City of Refuge. "In the very near future, we hope the sale of City of Refuge Coffee will pay for 100% of the operating costs of the home, providing a sustainable method of financing the help to these children." Mountain Mamas of Park City, UT, sells Tagua jewelry in its line that is made by Ecuadorian artisans and girl's clothing that is made from Ecuadorian mothers that are not allowed to work outside the home. This way the company really makes a difference in these people's lives. The company also donates a percentage of all sales to many national charities. Calypso Studios of Grantsville, MD, encourages its customers to "Support the fight against breast cancer" with the company's new Pink Ribbon Whisper Bracelets. The new bracelets, available after June 20, feature a dangling clay Pink Ribbon. Calypso Studios is in the process of evaluating several breast cancer charities to determine which they will partner with. The company will donate a portion of all Pink Ribbon Whisper Bracelet sales to the chosen breast cancer charity. The Pink Ribbon Expressions Whisper Bracelets contain metal beads engraved with the words "courage", "strength", and "hope". The Pink Ribbon Whisper Bracelet Assortment includes colorful glass beads on black, pink, or blue wiring. In Rwanda, a cooperative called "Gahaya Links" benefits women who work creating African Textile clutches for Amy Kathryn Handbags. Many of these women have suffered because of genocide in their country and the work is often a life-saving opportunity for them. "The women in the cooperative are earning incomes and pulling themselves and their families out of crippling poverty." says Janet Nkubana, founder of Gahaya Links. "The collective also plays an important role in healing the gaping wounds left by war and genocide."

A brand new company is making a difference in the area of eye care. MoralEyes, an eyeglasses maker, through a partnership with nonprofit "New Eyes for the Needy", has a "Buy One Give One" emphasis, where a pair of eyeglasses is donated for every pair sold. The company's frames are trendy and fashion forward and because of their partnership, they have been able to donate more than 15,000 pairs of glasses in less than one year with a total retail value of $300,000. "A pair of reading glasses can in many cases act as an instant fix for those with declining vision," says MoralEyes Founder and CEO Joe Sacks. "Reading glasses can foil preventable blindness and vision-related job loss in the elderly and promote literacy and education in young and old." Representatives of Moral Eyes have made trips with New Eyes for the Needy to Haiti and Honduras.
