How To Protect Yourself From Loss

According to a recent survey, retail theft is on the rise. As a retailer, you probably regard some "breakage" as inevitable, but, ideally, you can minimize shoplifting so that you are not hurt.

An astounding 96 percent of companies claim they’ve been the victim of theft in the past year, up from 94.5 percent last year, according to a new survey released by the National Retail Federation. "Criminals have become more desperate and brazen in their efforts, stopping at nothing to get their hands on large quantities of merchandise," NRF vice president of loss prevention, Rich Mellor, said in the report (source).

Rutgers University has cataloged common shoplifting techniques, including the large open bag placed on the floor so items can be casually dropped into it. Baby strollers are also commonly used to hide stolen items. Sometimes the crooks will work in teams, one distracting clerks while the other steals.

"Most shoplifters cannot succeed unless they get some privacy," says the Rutgers report. "This is why one of the best ways to stop shoplifting is to greet customers as soon as they walk in, then be attentive to them the rest of the time."

Electronics and small electrical appliances are perennial favorites of "five-finger" discounters, but the NFR survey found some new items on the list, such as infant formula and laundry detergent. Designer jeans continue to be high on the list for thieves.

The top 10 most affected cities are Atlanta, Baltimore, Washington D.C., Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Phoenix, and San Francisco, according to the NFR survey.

Why Customer Engagement Is Just As Important As Customer Service

One of the best outcomes from the social media explosion is that the customer service bar has been raised. Now that more people are freely sharing their customer experiences—both good and bad—with the world, quality customer service has become imperative.

Yet with everybody stepping up efforts, the customer service function has to evolve for a small business to further differentiate itself. This is why the next logical step in the customer service evolution is customer engagement.
