February Job Numbers and Lower Unemployment May Predict Stronger Retail Sales
While February's retail employment numbers were down more than 30,000 from January's gains, the Labor Department indicated a strong overall number of 235,000 new jobs in February, leading some industry watchers to predict an increase in retail spending for the rest of the year. February unemployment also fell to 4.7 percent, down from 4.8 percent in January.
"The surge in consumer and business optimism may have propelled the economy-wide increase in jobs last month," says National Retailers Federation's Chief Economist Jack Kleinhenz, "and supports our prediction for stronger consumer spending and retail sales for 2017." (source)
Kleinhenz sees the general surge in optimism among businesses and consumers continuing and believes more jobs and lower unemployment indicates people will have more money to spend on retail purchases this year.
Retails sales grew just 0.2 percent in February compared with double that number in January. However on a three-month moving average year-over-year, retail sales are up 2.8 percent. (source)
