Will the U.S. Have a Trade War with China?
President Donald Trump has directed U.S. trade officials to examine possible tariffs on Chinese imports. A hearing is scheduled for May 15 to decide what tariff's might be imposed. Trump has long complained about the uneven playing field in the U.S.'s trade imbalance with China, where China has always imposed stiff tariffs on US goods imported into their country, whereas the US has virtually no tariffs on many Chinese goods.
This imbalance, together with cheap Chinese labor and agressive industrialization in that country since World War II, have led American manufacturing to move almost en masse to China. Today, even General Motors and Ford assemble several Buick and Cadillac models in China and the Chinese company Gelly has bought Volvo and begun assembling one model of that brand there (source). The dearth of manufacturing jobs in the US is at the heart of Trump's tariff initiative.
Many industry watchers are warning that, while tariffs may punish China for unfair trade practices, a trade war would certainly hurt American businesses and consumers. “This is what a trade war looks like, and what we have warned against from the start,” said National Retail Federation President and CEO Matthew Shay. “We are on a dangerous downward spiral and American families will be on the losing end.”
So far, targeted industries may not affect the readers of this newsletter to a great degree, but only time will tell how this dust-up shakes out.
Tariffs are nothing new. It should be pointed out that for the first 130 years of it's existence, the U.S. Federal Government's revenues consisted almost entirely of tariffs and excise taxes (source). The income tax was not instituted until 1913, 123 years after the Constitution established the government as it is today. Income and Social Security taxes did not become the lion's share of revenues until the 1940s.
