Retail Sales Remain Strong in January After Improved Holiday Season
U.S. retail sales remained strong during January, showing a 5.4% increase over January, 2017. This comes on the heels of a 5.1% increase year-over-year in December (source).
“These numbers reinforce a positive start to 2018 that reflects ongoing consumer optimism brought about by solid economic fundamentals,” National Retail Federation Chief Economist Jack Kleinhenz said. Consumer confidence has been bouyed by employment increases and wage growth, and, while the stock market has undergone a correction, the gains during 2017 have not been erased.
NRF forecasts retail increases for 2018 between 3.8% and 4.4% over 2017
The increase in January does not include retailers in the restaurant, gasoline and automobile sectors. Online sales were up 13.2% in January over the same time last year. Furniture and home furnishings were up 6.6%, apparel was up 3.1% and general merchandise stores were up 3%. Sporting goods stores showed the only decrease, down 5.9%, year-over-year.
The National Retail Federation forecasts increased retail sales for 2018 between 3.8% and 4.4% over 2017.

Buyer Attendance Increases in Las Vegas
Giftware News reports a 13% increase in buyer attendance at the Winter 2018 Las Vegas Market, which was held Jan. 28 through Feb. 1. The furniture segment had the strongest gains with 17%, followed by Gift with 12% and Home Decor with 9%.
