New Tariffs on China Not Directed at Gifts
The Trump Administration instituted new tariffs on China on Friday, July 6, and China responded with new tariffs of its own, but the products affected are not gifts, décor, garden, toys or other products sold by most readers of this newsletter.
New tariffs are directed at the huge volume of
imports from ChinaChinese products included in the US tariffs include vehicles (including airplanes and boats), spacecraft and techology (such as satellites), industrial machinery, medical devices and miscellaneous diagnostic equipment (like semiconductor testing devices, microscope and seismographs).
China's response was to put additional tariffs on food (poultry, fruits, vegetables, dairy, seafood, beverages), tobacco and vehicles (source).
Some retailers worry about the affect on Christmas sales (source) because the Trump administration has threatened to increase the amount of Chinese imports covered in the new tariffs to as much as $400 billion, but as can be seen from the targeted items above, the focus so far seems to be on industrial machinery and food, rather than the kind of consumer goods that sell in large numbers for the holidays.
UBS Securities economist Robert Martin sees the threat of as much as $400 billion in new levies as just a negotiating tactic. He believes China and the U.S. probably will reach some kind of resolution in order to avoid the mutual economic harm of a rapidly escalating trade war. Martin was on President George W.
