What Does the Closure of Toys R Us Mean for Retailers?
The big news this month has been the closure of most, if not all, Toys R Us locations in the United States. The company is trying to find a buyer for 200 stores (including Canadian locations), but that would still mean 600 stores, including Babies R Us locations, would close (source). What does this mean for small retailers?
image: DreamsTime.comFirst, we should take a breath. Does anyone remember Woolworth? How about Borders or Circuit City? The latter is being resurrected as a website and kiosks this year. This just means this isn't the first time a retail chain that appeared solid failed.
There are a lot of reasons a chain might fail. After all, Borders and Circuit City failed, but Barnes & Noble and Best Buy continue on. In the case of Toys R Us, it was apparently debt incurred when the owners took the company private, that brought it down. The chain may also have been ill-prepared for competition from big-box and online stores (source).
So the lesson may be that retail is evolving and, to survive, retailers must evolve as well. What can you do to give your customers an experience they can't get at the big-box stores? “Experiential” is a buzz word among brick-and-mortar retailers trying to compete with online retail. It means what does the customer experience in the way of atmosphere and/or personal service that they would not get in either a big-box or online environment? Could you have coffee or wine gatherings or "how-to" workshops or artist/author signings, depending on the type of store you have? Anything to get people into your store to get aquainted.
Retailers also need to be aware that customers, especially younger ones, tend to do their research online before they come to a store. They may indeed buy from the brick-and-mortar store, but they will arrive already informed. This means the retail store needs to have a web and social media presence that communicates where it is located and what kind of products it has, even if it isn't an ecommerce site.
