Consumer Confidence Could Result in Traditional Shopping, As Opposed to Online Purchases
Some prognosticators say increased consumer confidence could mean better brick-and-mortar sales for the Holidays.
While Amazon.com and other online retailers have been eating into traditional brick-and-mortar stores' market share, at least one prognosticator believes high consumer confidence will translate into increased business for stores as opposed to online shopping. "Amazon is not fun," said Jan Rogers Kniffen flatly, during an interview on CNBC's "Power Lunch" on Nov. 5 (source). Kniffen is a former, longtime department store executive who insists: “When the consumer is happy or feels good, they're more likely to be in the stores and doing things experiential because it's fun.”
While admitting that Amazon.com is "still taking over" and traditional retailers are strengthening their online presence, Kniffen predicted another solid increase, perhaps as much as last year's 5.5 percent, in holiday sales. The traditional shopping experience could be the beneficiary of the good feeling on the part of consumers, as they extend that good feeling into remembering why they like shopping.
While not as effusive as Kniffen, the National Retail Federation's chief executive Matthew Shay predicted a healthy 4.3 to 4.8 percent increase over 2017, which saw its own increase of 5.3 percent (source)
