Holiday Sales Were the Best in Six Years
Major retailers report "record-breaking" sales for the 2018 holiday season, posting more than five percent improvement over a year earlier, the best overall in six years (source).
Online sales grew by a strong 19.1%, but conventional sales doing well. Apparel improved 7.9%, which was the category's strongest holiday season in eight years. Overall performance was strengthened by a 26.4% growth in online sales from the Wednesday before Thanksgiving through Black Friday.
Home Improvement was also a strong sector, showing a 9% growth year-over-year.
Department store sales declined slightly, partially attributed to store closures, but online sales more than compensated with a 10.2% increase. A longer-than-usual space between Thanksgiving and Christmas caused a slight lull after Thanksgiving, but sales picked up again before Christmas.
The 5.1% increase overall handily beat the National Retail Federation's prediction of 4.3%-4.8% (source), confirming reports of bouyant consumer confidence, unaffected by the ups and downs of Wall Street.
