Online Sales Account for Most of Increase in Holiday Shopping
In the 2019 holiday shopping season, sales increased overall 3.4% compared with 2018, but a shorter-than-usual season may have contributed to most of the increase being online.

According to an article by Barron's, that difference in the calendar may have motivated more people to do their shopping online to save time. As a result, online sales increased by 19%, whereas in-store sales increased 1.2%.
This means that online shopping represented 15% of holiday retail sales, a record high.
Barron's credits the good economy with the overall increase in holiday spending. "Households are in good shape. Unemployment is at half-century lows, wages have been increasing faster than inflation, and consumer confidence remains near its highs of the cycle," according to the article by Nicholas Jasinski, reporter focusing on stock coverage.
The numbers cited by Barron's are from Mastercard. More complete data will be released by the U.S. Commerce Department later this month.
