Surviving COVID-19: Trade Shows Open Up Again
Major Summer Shows Postponed
The shutdown to slow the spread of the COVID-19 outbreak cancelled or delayed many industry trade shows this year, with major shows postponing from June or July to August. As state governors began allowing businesses to reopen, Georgia, the site of AmericasMart, has been in the news, with many criticizing the state's policy as too much, too soon.
International Market Centers (IMC) which owns and operates AmericasMart, as well as the Las Vegas and High Point Markets, has announced it is resuming its schedule with the June Atlanta Apparel Market (June 10-13), except there will be no temporaries (source). Subsequent shows will follow according to the original schedule, with the exception of the Summer Gift and Home Market, usually held in July, but this year postponed to August 13-18.
The summer Las Vegas show is likewise postponed to Aug. 30-Sept. 3. IMC based its decisions on a survey of retailers, tenants and exhibitors. Survey results indicated COVID 19-related concerns about travel and market attendance will decrease over time. While some expressed intent to source at physical markets, many said they would use online tools for sourcing as well.
In High Point, IMC's buildings opened May 13th by appointment only.
IMC established a COVID-19 response and remediation task force to develop protocols to ensure the health and safety of all those attending market. Medical professionals, specializing in epidemiology have been tapped to aid in formulating the protocols.
Texas has also largely opened for business once again and the Dallas Market Center website shows a full schedule beginning in June, with the Apparel & Accessories Market June 23-26. KidsWorld runs concurrently with the Apparel Market. Like IMC, Dallas Market Center has also postponed its Total Home & Gift Market from the usual June to August 19-25.
In New York City, the location with the greatest number of cases and deaths, NY Now has postponed its summer market from August to October 18-20. Since the Javits Center was transformed into a field hospital, this postponement was inevitable. Shop Object will stage at Pier 36 Oct. 20-22 (more).
